為什麼推嬰兒車搭 MTR 這麼難?

Why is it so difficult to take a stroller on an MTR?

In Hong Kong, the MTR is one of the most convenient modes of transport, but it can be a "challenge-level task" for parents with strollers. Crowds, narrow spaces, and poorly located elevators, coupled with the massive crowds during peak hours, can easily compromise both safety and comfort.

1. Avoid peak hours

Try to avoid peak hours for commuting to and from get off work and school (approximately 7:30 – 9:30 am and 5 – 7 pm).
Tip: If you must travel during these times, check the MTR "Busyness Forecast" function in advance and choose a station exit with less crowds.

II. Pre-locating the elevator

Many station elevators are not in obvious locations, and some require a detour to reach the platform.
Tips:

  • You can view the "Accessibility Map" on the MTR official website or app.

  • Pay attention to "elevator maintenance" notices to avoid elevators that are temporarily closed.

  • If the elevator is out of service, please go to the information desk and ask the staff for assistance.

III. Techniques for entering and exiting gates and carriages

  • Use wheelchair/stroller gates whenever possible for wider passageways.

  • When entering the carriage, let passengers disembark first before entering; choose a seat in the middle of the carriage where there is more space.

  • The wheels can be locked inside the carriage to face you and maintain stability.

IV. Make good use of "friendly staff" for assistance.

MTR staff can provide guidance, alternative elevator routes, and safety assistance.
If needed, they can arrange for you to use the freight elevator or open the staff access.

V. Pay attention to safety details

  • Try to use strollers with four-wheel locks.

  • Avoid putting too many items on the handlebars to prevent imbalance.

  • Hold the stroller handle firmly when getting in and out of the carriage.

  • Keep your hands on the ground for support in case of emergency braking or shaking of the vehicle.

6. Prepare a small checklist for a smoother trip

  • Water bottle/baby bottle

  • wet wipes

  • Toys or music can soothe a baby.

  • Foldable stroller (suitable for small spaces)

  • Octopus card + electronic payment backup

VII. Other parents' genuine experiences

"The escalator at Causeway Bay Station is too far; I suggest getting off at Tin Hau Station and then turning back!"
"There are too many people at Mong Kok Station. I'd rather take a longer route to avoid it."
"The accessibility features on the MTR App are really useful!"
